The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja has convened an inaugural stakeholders’ meeting to develop a strategic work plan for the implementation of the Nigerian Fire Extinguisher Control (NFEC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This follows the Federal Executive Council’s recent approval of the NFEC and its subsequent approval for nationwide implementation through a public-private partnership framework across the 36 states and the FCT.

The meeting which was held on Tuesday in Abuja offered the stakeholders an opportunity to deliberate on effective modalities to ensure a seamless rollout of the NFEC initiative.

The key objectives of the NFEC initiative include enhancing public awareness on the proper use and deployment of fire extinguishers, educating the public on identifying expiration dates on gas cylinders and fire extinguishers, and providing specialized training for filling station managers and fire extinguisher vendors.

Also, the initiative underlines inter-agency collaboration to promote compliance with fire safety codes, with the broader goal of strengthening preparedness and ensuring effective fire disaster management.

The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to support the project and stressed the importance of collective action in advancing fire safety measures across the FCT and Nigeria at large.
