NDLEA Moves To Curb Mkpurumiri In Imo State
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Imo State has launched a renewed offensive against the production of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as Mkpurumiri, in a bid to curb the growing menace of synthetic drug abuse among youths in the state.
According to the State Commandant of the NDLEA, Ibrahim Ohida, the agency has ramped up efforts to identify and dismantle suspected drug laboratories across local communities.
He said:.“One of our top priorities now is to locate and shut down the illegal labs where these banned substances are manufactured.”
He described the campaign as a proactive strategy aimed at addressing the surge in methamphetamine abuse, which has become a public health and security concern, especially in the Southeast region.
Ohida called on the public to support the fight by reporting suspicious activities related to drug production. He assured that all information provided would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
“Community vigilance and timely reporting can significantly curb the production and distribution of methamphetamines and other illicit substances,” he said.
The NDLEA boss emphasized that lasting success in the war on drugs would require collaboration between law enforcement and the public and urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other community influencers to step up awareness campaigns about the devastating effects of Mkpurumiri on individuals and families.
“This is not just a law enforcement issue; it’s a community issue. The destruction caused by these drugs is visible in the lives of our young people. Everyone must get involved,” Ohida said.
The agency’s renewed action comes amid growing concerns over the social, psychological, and health consequences of Mkpurumiri use in the state.
Authorities believe that the new crackdown could significantly disrupt the local drug trade and stop further abuse of the drug in the state.
