The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), is intensifying its fight against online piracy following the suspension of MovieBox.ng, a notorious website illegally streaming pirated movies, music, and live sports.
The takedown took effect on July 20, 2025, but new findings by THE WHISTLER shows the piracy platform have resurfaced under a new domain, MovieBox.ph.
Dr John Asein, Director-General of the NCC, confirmed that movieBox.ng operated within a sophisticated network using multiple mirror and fallback domains to evade detection.
“They use clone sites to distribute pirated content and evade detection, posing a serious threat to copyright holders,” Asein stated in a press release issued Thursday in Abuja.
Concerns have emerged about the platform’s potential shift to moviebox.ph, a domain not explicitly named in the NCC’s initial reports but observed by THE WHISTLER to be a mirror site.
The NCC has vowed to track and deactivate such clone domains to prevent the platform’s resurgence.
“We are actively monitoring and working to disable mirror sites associated with movieBox.ng,” Asein assured, calling on Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and digital intermediaries to comply with takedown requests.
Efforts to reach Mrs Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs at the NCC, for further comment on movieBox.ph were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
