NCAA Outlaws Airplane Mode, Orders Phones Off During Take-Off, Landing
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says all airline passengers must switch off their mobile phones during take-off and landing, without the option of airplane mode.
NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, announced the new directive in a post on X after an emergency meeting with aviation stakeholders on Tuesday.
“Henceforth, the regulation per phones and other electronic devices in Nigeria has been unified: All phones must be switched off during the critical aspects of take off and landing,” Achimugu stated.
He added that airlines must immediately amend their operational and security programmes to reflect the regulation. “No more airplane mode until regulations are reviewed to reflect evolving technological situations,” he said.
The NCAA explained that the safety and security measures are aimed at protecting passengers, crew and airport operations.
In a related notice, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) reinforced mandatory security checks at all terminals, including baggage screening, boarding gate checks, and the confiscation of liquids above 100ml.
“All persons and luggage passing through the security at the entrance of terminal building must be screened. Only passengers with valid travel documents will be allowed access to departure halls,” FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiajulu Orah, said in a statement.
FAAN also reminded travellers that dangerous goods and prohibited items are not allowed in either hand or checked-in luggage, while metallic objects, belts, shoes, and devices must be removed at screening points.
