NBA urges Police to curb vigilante excesses in Niger

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Minna Branch, Niger State, Isyaku Barau, has expressed concern over the excesses of vigilante groups, noting the need for training on rules of engagement and best practices.

Barau made the remarks during a visit to the Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, in Minna, where he was accompanied by his executive team to discuss security concerns in the state.

He commended the police for their efforts in tackling thuggery but raised concerns about the unchecked actions of vigilante groups, urging the Commissioner of Police to initiate training on proper engagement protocols.

According to him, “These non-state actors (vigilantes) should be enlightened and trained on rules of engagement in line with best standard practices and rule of law.”

The NBA chairman also praised the command’s former legal officer, CSP Jude Akaeze, for his contributions to prosecuting cases and recommended that the police continue to maintain such positive representation.

He further stressed the importance of effective exhibit management in the prosecution of cases, suggesting that officers with the requisite expertise be assigned to handle that unit for better performance.

Other issues discussed during the visit included strengthening police-lawyer relations and providing further training for investigating officers.

In his response, CP Elleman assured the NBA of his commitment to upholding human rights and pledged to work closely with the association.

He also recognised the importance of continuous training for personnel and highlighted his ongoing collaboration with the Attorney-General’s office to retain police lay prosecutors due to the scale of prosecution responsibilities.
