National Grid: Enugu Residents Embrace ‘After NEPA’ Gadget For Light
Some residents of Enugu now patronise a locally made electricity gadget for power supply following the collapse of the national grid as well as the high cost of electricity.
They attributed their switch to the infamous fabricated gadget being marketed by some north and Ebonyi State hawkers to inflation.
THE WHISTLER gathered that one “after NEPA” costs N300 while a mini-batteries to operate it cost N300 per pair.
“It is our only source of light at night,” said Oliver Okoye, a teacher. According to him, “I can’t afford a litre of fuel at N1,250, so I have abandoned my generator since this fuel subsidy removal. It is no longer sustainable for me.
“Suddenly, they also hiked the cost of electricity. They claimed we migrated to Band A. It costs me over N10,000 a week to service my electricity bills. How much is my salary? That is why this ‘after NEPA’ has become the only hope.”
Nkemdili Ossai is also in the same category. She said, “For quite some time, ‘after NEPA’ has been what I use. Even that one isn’t easy because of the high cost of finger batteries to power it. But for now, it is our only source of light at night. We thank this government for its policies.”
Ikenna Maduka says he now charges his phone at pubs. According to him, “I move around with my charger. Anywhere I see power sources, I plug my phone. Our transformer has issues, and EEDC hasn’t attended to it for over three weeks that we reported the matter. But they have been submitting the bills.”
It was gathered that it is the same story at Nsukka, where some residents of Nru community, along Enugu road, have been in darkness for about four weeks.
“Our transformer burnt, and nobody is saying anything,” said Dr Fabian Nnaji, a lecturer. “It is no longer funny. We charge our phones in our cars, but it is getting worse because of the high cost of fuel.
“We are watching our leaders and how they trade our welfare. Hardship is not a good attribute of leadership. Unfortunately, they still claim to be helping us.”
