NASS Joint Committee Proposes 30% Salary Drop For Legislators, 40% For Executives

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters has suggested severe compensation adjustments for legislators and executive members, to decrease government spending.

On Monday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, led an interactive session in which the committee recommended a 30% reduction in legislator salaries and a 40% cut in executive salaries.

The session also included discussions with political parties and the courts about the National Assembly’s current review and amendment of the Electoral Act 2022.

Political parties supported having all elections—presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and State Houses of Assembly—on a single day to cut costs.

They contended that the current staggered election schedule is not cost-effective.

Furthermore, the parties advocated tying continuous voter registration to the National Identity Number (NIN) to improve security and cut costs during voter registration.

Among the 35 ideas provided by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Chair, political parties argued that the selection of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairperson should be advertised rather than managed by the executive branch.

Senator Alli stated that the joint committee will continue to work with INEC and other stakeholders around Nigeria to get detailed feedback.

This strategy seeks to prevent disturbances and ensure that future elections go smoothly without dispute.
