The Nasarawa State Police Command says it has taken into custody a young woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a bush at Akwanga town.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, told reporters in Lafia on Thursday that the suspect had already been identified and arrested.

According to Nansel, the Commissioner of Police has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.

The abandoned infant, a baby girl, was reportedly discovered on Wednesday morning near the Hope Academy Primary School in the popular A.A. Koto area of Akwanga.

Wrapped in a piece of cloth, the child was rescued alive by concerned residents who immediately handed her over to the authorities.

Eyewitnesses said the mother of the baby is a final-year NCE student of the College of Education, Akwanga.
