NAPTIP Rescues 7,000 Trafficked Victims, Secures 205 Convictions In Two Years
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has revealed that between 2022 and 2024, the agency rescued over 7,000 trafficked victims and secured 205 convictions.
NAPTIP’s Director-General, Binta Adamu Bello, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during the 27th National Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Human Trafficking.
Bello highlighted the agency’s achievements, including the inauguration of over 208 Anti-TIP and VAPP vanguards across schools nationwide.
The agency has also developed digital tools to improve data collection and reporting on trafficking cases, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Swiss government.
Other notable achievements include the reactivation of the GBV data platform and the establishment of a digital centre in Katsina with support from the Nigerian Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
Bello emphasised the need for continued collaboration and public awareness to combat human trafficking.
“We must fight together or become enablers through our silence,” she urged.
Also speaking, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, highlighted the importance of adapting to new challenges in the fight against human trafficking.
“Human trafficking remains one of the world’s most profitable crimes. We must adapt, especially as traffickers now exploit digital tools to operate,” he said.
The UNODC Representative in Nigeria, Cheikh Touré, commended NAPTIP’s leadership and called for improved coordination, stronger data systems, and survivor-led strategies.
