NAFDAC Warns Fake Contraceptive Injections Circulating In Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public on the sale of chlorpheniramine and dexamethasone injection ampoules that are mislabeled and repackaged as Noristerat Injection 200 mg.
NAFDAC said samples of the counterfeit product have been reported in Niger State, Bauchi State, and the Coordinated Wholesale Centre (CWC) in Kano State.
It added that the counterfeiter has been tracked and arrested for further investigation and enforcement of regulatory sanctions.
The agency, on its website on Monday, said the falsified product has its expiry date as 09/27 and 09/22 as the production date.
Genuine Noristerat 200 mg is a contraceptive injection that offers 8 weeks of pregnancy protection. It is a short-term birth control method.
The agency noted that all NAFDAC zonal directors and state coordinators have been directed to carry out surveillance and mop up the falsified product within the zones and states.
It also advised all importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers to exercise caution and vigilance in the supply chain to prevent the importation, distribution, sale, and use of falsified products.
NAFDAC urged that all medical products must be obtained from authorised/licensed suppliers and the products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked.
It noted that the notice will be uploaded to the WHO Global Surveillance and Monitoring System (GSMS).
The agency further enjoined all healthcare professionals and consumers to report any suspicion of sale of substandard and falsified medicines or medical devices to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322 or via email: [email protected]
Similarly, healthcare professionals and patients are also encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of medicinal products or devices to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the use of the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng or via the Med-safety application available for download on android and iOS stores or via e-mail on [email protected]
