Most Nigerian manufacturers boycott national grid – Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has said that the majority of Nigerian manufacturers, industries and other bulk electricity users have boycotted the country’s national grid over a lack of trust and confidence.

The minister disclosed this on Thursday in his speech at the retreat of the board of the Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company in Lagos.

Adelabu, however, emphasised that the country’s national grid is a more viable and reliable power source for bulk electricity consumers than other, more expensive alternatives.

He regretted that, despite generating a record 5,155 megawatts in July, the electricity is not being taken up due to distribution constraints.

He said: “The majority of bulk electricity users, such as industries, are off the grid due to a lack of trust and confidence in the past.

“They now have their captive power plants in their industries, which is more expensive.”

DAILY POST recalls that in April 2024, Nigeria introduced a 240 per cent electricity tariff hike for Band A customers getting at least 20 hours of power supply. The development has led to a significant rise in the cost of energy for manufacturers, industries and Nigerians.
