The Borno State Police Command, on Tuesday, said it has begun rehabilitating two minors who escaped from Boko Haram captivity after nearly six years.

THE WHISTLER reported that Ayuba Ishaku and Yakubu Haruna, aged about 13 years, arrived at the ITE Divisional Police Headquarters in Maiduguri and disclosed that they had escaped from captivity under Boko Haram terrorists.

According to their statements, the terrorists abducted the boys during an attack on Mandaragrau village in Biu Local Government Area, Borno State, along with several women and children.

The insurgents transported them to Mangari, Tumbun Mota area of Baga in Kukawa LGA, where they held them captive.

While in captivity, the boys said they served as domestic aides and received training on servicing firearms.

After months of planning, they seized an opportunity to escape on the night of July 8, 2025, when most of the terrorists had left for an operation.

ASP Nahum Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, said the boys trekked through the bush and passed through nearby villages and communities until they arrived in Maiduguri on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, the police initiated efforts to trace their families.

Daso said, “Consequently, Mr. Ishaku Gaji, father of Ayuba Ishaku, was identified and he confirmed that the boys, along with other women and children, were abducted on 29th December, 2019.

“The children have been referred to the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs for comprehensive debriefing under the Borno State Model, which facilitates rehabilitation, support, and reintegration of victims of terrorism.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, commended the bravery and resilience of the young survivors and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting citizens and collaborating with all stakeholders to address the ongoing challenges of insurgency.”

Daso urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
