Men’s Role Crucial In Maternal Health, Says Medical Women’s Association

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has urged men to understand their role in ensuring the health of their pregnant wives and unborn children.
The Bauchi State President of the association, Dr. Umma Hani Ja’afaru stated this during an interview with journalists on Thursday.
Ja’afaru emphasised the importance of actively involving men, particularly in addressing iron deficiency anaemia, to help prevent maternal and infant mortality during pregnancy.
She added that anaemia remains one of the leading causes of maternal deaths worldwide, with iron deficiency being the most common contributing factor.
“Anaemia, especially during pregnancy, is not just a direct risk factor for postpartum haemorrhage; it also exacerbates maternal morbidity and mortality.
“Globally, postpartum haemorrhage accounts for about five per cent of maternal deaths, with the burden being significantly higher in sub-Saharan Africa.
“Anaemia doesn’t just affect the mother; it can also impact the unborn child, leading to growth restrictions, miscarriages, or even intrauterine death,” she added.
She advised the men to ensure that the pregnant women’s meal is balanced and rich in iron to prevent anaemia.
She emphasised the importance of regular antenatal care attendance, where expectant mothers can receive essential health education and iron supplements to support a healthy pregnancy.
“Antenatal clinics educate women on danger signs during pregnancy, including symptoms of anaemia. Iron supplements like folic acid are given to help prevent complications,” she explained.
Ja’afaru appealed to stakeholders, healthcare providers, and the general public to make combating iron deficiency anaemia a top priority by promoting education, nutritional support, and enhanced access to quality healthcare services.
