Manchester United Confirm Amorim As New Coach
Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new coach to replace Erik Ten Hag.
It would be recalled that Erik Ten Hag was sacked on Monday following the team’s poor performances, which resulted in one win in eight matches.
Sporting Lisbon coach, Ruben Amorim has now been appointed to replace Ten Hag on a full-time basis, signing a contract until June 2027.
Amorim will take charge of the team on November 11, while Ruud Van Nistelrooy will continue his role as an interim manager for the next three matches.
The Red Devils confirmed Amorim’s appointment with a statement on Friday on their website.
The statement reads, “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team.
“He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.
“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.”
On Wednesday, Sporting Lisbon confirmed that United had agreed to pay 10m euros (£8.3m) to trigger a release clause in Amorim’s contract.
The 39-year-old has won two league titles, and two Portuguese Cup trophies with Sporting Lisbon since joining the club in 2020.
