The first lady of Anambra State, Mrs Nonye Soludo, says the husband who set his wife on fire at Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state must be brought to book.

Mrs Soludo stated this after receiving details of the incident from the Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, and her health counterpart, Dr Afam Obidike. Mrs Soludo had earlier directed the duo to visit the scene of the incident.

THE WHISTLER reports that the victim, Mrs Blessing Chioma Nwaka, was seen in a viral video late yesterday, scampering for safety while carrying a third degree burn around her torso and other body areas.

An eyewitness, on condition of anonymity, said the victim’s husband, one Mr Sunday Obiozor Nwaka, allegedly emptied a can of fuel on the woman and set her on fire over little family misunderstanding. Sympathisers came to her rescue, and rushed her to a medical facility at Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka LGA, where she was pronounced dead.

The alleged arsonist has now been taken into custody and would soon face prosecution.

Mrs Soludo, reacting, vowed that the suspect would be made to face the full weight of the law. She said

She reiterated that the present administration takes issues of domestic violence and abuses as serious crimes, stating that no one who is found guilty of such offences would be let to walk free.

She expressed worries over rising cases of violence and abuses in homes, and called for serious social reformation, beginning with a systemic approach to fighting drug use and related problems.

She added that the state government would take care of the five children left behind by the deceased.
