Man Jailed For Vandalizing Lagos Gov’t Property
One Freedom Sunday Akabuchi was on Wednesday sentenced to six months in prison after he was caught vandalizing public infrastructure at Peace Park in Ojota, Lagos.
He was apprehended by officials of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) for cutting a wire mesh pole within the park.
He was arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Bolade, Oshodi, on a three-count charge of conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, wilful damage to government property, and theft of government property.
Akabuchi pleaded guilty to the first and third charges, for which he received a six-month prison sentence.
The court has scheduled a trial date for the second charge after the completion of his current sentence.
Speaking on the conviction, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance stance on the vandalism of public infrastructure.
“Let this be a stern reminder: government properties are public assets, not for personal exploitation.
“Acts of vandalism will be met with the full weight of the law,” Wahab said.
He urged residents to remain law-abiding and to protect state-owned facilities meant for the collective benefit of the public under the #GreaterLagosRising initiative.
