Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan believes they need to beat Liverpool to boost their Premier League title hopes after another disappointing performance against Feyenoord.
Guardiola’s men surrendered a 3-0 lead to play out a 3-3 draw against the Dutch side at the Etihad to continue their poor run in recent weeks.
The Cityzens have now gone six matches without a win, losing five of them in all competitions, a return that has put their title hopes in jeopardy after winning the last four Premier League titles.
Up next for the defending champions is a trip to Anfield to face table-toppers Liverpool, who are currently eight points clear on the Premier League log.
Gundogan has revealed that defeat at Anfield on Sunday could end their shaky title hopes following their shambolic form.
He said: “To stay in the title race, probably yes, (it’s a game City can’t afford to lose), because 11 points would be a huge gap,” said the midfield veteran.
“Anfield is always tough, no matter the situation. We’ve struggled in recent years going there and we know Liverpool are a great team full of confidence right now.
“It’s going to be as tough as it is possible to be but that sums up the situation right now. It seems we have to go through this season the toughest way possible.”
Similarly, Pep Guardiola also admitted that a loss to Liverpool will effectively end their title aspirations.
He said: “Yes. In terms of Liverpool winning, winning, winning.
“We have to think about the next game rather than the end of the season. We won it in the past because we deserved it, now we have to step-by-step get better and first of [all] qualification for the Champions League.”
Manchester City have lost their last three Premier League games against Bournemouth, Brighton, and Tottenham.
Arne Slot, who took over from Jürgen Klopp in the summer, has guided Liverpool to 10 wins out of 12 Premier League games this season.
