Malami accuses Kebbi Governor of collusion with mercenaries

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who also leads the African Democratic Congress, in Kebbi State, has petitioned top security chiefs over alleged plans to destabilise the state through the importation of political thugs, foreign mercenaries, and illegal arms.

In the petition, dated September 10, 2025, Malami raised alarm to the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Comptroller-Generals of Immigration and the Civil Defence Corps.

He alleged that political actors were collaborating with mercenaries from Niger Republic, arming them through illegal channels, and deploying them to attack citizens, silence opposition, and undermine peace in Kebbi.

According to him, the threats were credible and not speculative, citing a September 1, 2025, incident in which he and other indigenes were allegedly attacked by armed thugs “operating without fear of law enforcement.”

The petition further accused Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris and his associates of aiding the operations, alleging covert ties with the terrorist network Lakurawa. Malami described the situation as “a national security emergency” with grave implications for Nigeria’s sovereignty and internal stability.

He urged urgent inter-agency action to secure border communities, block the influx of mercenaries and arms, and investigate the alleged collusion between state officials and terrorist groups.

The petition was also copied to the heads of the DSS, Police, Immigration, and Civil Defence, underscoring its urgency.
