Maduka University Chancellor Converts Country Home To Teaching Hospital

Dr Samuel Maduka Onyishi, the Chancellor of Maduka University, Nsukka, Enugu State, has converted his castle located in his Amukwa country home in Nsukka to the university’s teaching hospital.

Dr Onyishi had earlier informed THE WHISTLER that he would establish Maduka University Teaching Hospital in his country home “as a legacy, and by extension, to provide a world-class tertiary health institution in Nsukka Senatorial Zone and its neighbouring states”.

Dr Onyishi, who is also the Chairman of Peace Group of Companies, in a post on his Facebook page on Monday, entitled “From Mansion to Miracle: How Dr Samuel Maduka Onyishi is Turning His Castle into Teaching Hospital for the People”, stated that the conversation was for the wellbeing of the people generally.

According to him, “In the area known as Nsukka Economic and Cultural Zone, which cuts across two senatorial districts, there is no tertiary health facility despite hosting the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.”

He said his move to transform his palatial country home into a teaching hospital was part of his uncommon decisions, adding that “Most would have kept it that way, enjoying its beauty and comfort in peace”, but for him, it “is transforming his private home and its surrounding buildings into an international multi-specialty hospital designed to serve both the public and the medical students of Maduka University and other medical training institutions”.

He said to make the teaching hospital of international standards, he further acquired 14 additional properties around the vicinity “to make sure that this full-scale health care facility was established” in his village.

According to him, “Thinking home, you may call this. This isn’t just renovation, but some new buildings are already rearing their heads. It’s a transformation on a massive scale.”

He said he intentionally chose the location of the proposed university teaching hospital to be in Nsukka urban town, with a clear purpose of elevating the urban status of Nsukka and drive development in his beloved community.

“Renovations are already ongoing and soon, this luxurious property will become a state-of-the-art medical facility, not for the rich, not for the elite, but for the people,” he wrote.

The business mogul stated that when the project is completed, “this teaching hospital is set to become one of the best in the country — a beacon of world-class medical education and accessible healthcare.”

Dr Onyishi in the post declared his desire “to return most of his wealth to charity”, adding that “this hospital is just one part of that promise”, including that he had become “a billionaire without a home in his village”.

He stated that his goal in building Maduka University with a special focus on entrepreneurship was to build “a future where healthcare is accessible, where education is empowering, and where transport is safe and reliable.”

He described himself as “a man who understands that wealth is not just for comfort but for impact.”
