LG election: There will be no room for new voter registration in Ogun – OGSIEC Chair

The Chairman of Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Mr. Babatunde Osibodu, has disclosed that there will be no room for new voter registration in the forthcoming local government election in the state.

Osibodu made this announcement via a statement made available to DAILY POST on Friday.

DAILY POST gathered that the local government election has been fixed to hold in the state in November this year.

However, Osibodu stated that there will be no room for new voter registration during the preparation for the election.

He maintained that the commission will use voter data compiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2023 elections in the state.

He also said that the commission will adopt a manual collation process for the forthcoming election.

Speaking further, Osibodu declared that the commission does not have the mandate to register voters.

He noted that this has led the commission to rely on INEC’s existing voter database.

He encouraged all political parties in the state to participate in the election.

He added that this is necessary to ensure the integrity of the process.

Osibodu also disclosed, “There will be no new voter registrations for the 2024 local government elections. Instead, the commission will use voter data compiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2023 gubernatorial elections.

“OGSIEC does not have the mandate to register voters, hence the reliance on INEC’s existing voter database. If opposition parties do not put forward candidates, it opens the door to manipulation and rigging.

“I encourage all parties to actively participate and field candidates to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and uphold the democratic values of Ogun State.

“OGSIEC is taking all necessary measures to prevent violence and ensure the safety of lives and property during the elections. We are working closely with security agencies to provide a safe environment for all voters.”
