Legal counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Barrister. Aloy Ejimakor has alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) facility today reportedly denied Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, access to his client, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, just minutes before their scheduled legal consultation.

According to Ejimakor in a Tweet on his verified X account formerly Twitter on Monday, the respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Attorney General of the Federation was forced to leave the DSS premises visibly upset, raising fresh concerns about the government’s commitment to ensuring a fair trial for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

Ejimakor wrote, “The DSS needs to explain to Nigerians why it blocked Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, from meeting with his client, MAZI NNAMDI KANU.

“They did this a few minutes ago, & the high chief has left the DSS facility, very upset. This is a flagrant interference with a fair trial. Injustice,” said Ejimakor, urging the DSS to immediately explain the reasons behind the obstruction.

The DSS has not issued an official statement on the matter as of press time.

Kanu has been in the DSS holding cell since he was rearrested and subjected to extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021.

Since his return, the Appeal Court in Abuja had discharged and acquitted him of all treasonable felony charges, but the Nigerian government had refused to sanction his release.

A few months ago, Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court had stepped down from Kanu’s trial, and the case was reassigned to Justice James Omotosho of the same court.

Under Omotosho, the Nigerian government had slapped terrorism charges on the IPOB leader.
