Lagos taskforce arrests 63 okada riders for flouting ban
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, popularly known as the Taskforce, has intensified its clampdown on commercial motorcyclists, commonly referred to as Okada riders, operating in restricted areas across the state, arresting 63 violators in a single coordinated operation.
The enforcement exercise, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, targeted high-risk and high-traffic corridors including Mile 2 Oke Bridge, Mile 2 Under Bridge, Berger Suya, Amuwo Odofin, and Apple Junction in Festac.
Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to enforce traffic laws, promote public safety, and maintain order on Lagos roads.
“We will not allow a few people to compromise the safety of millions of Lagosians. The ban on Okada in specific areas was implemented to protect lives and property, and anyone found flouting this directive will be dealt with according to the law,” Akerele said.
Despite extensive sensitization campaigns and multiple warnings, a segment of Okada operators has continued to defy the ban, prompting authorities to adopt a tougher enforcement stance.
All 63 motorcycles seized during the latest operation have been impounded, and legal proceedings are being initiated against the offenders.
Akerele reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to the THEMES PLUS Agenda, which places a premium on safety and security across the metropolis.
He also urged commercial motorcyclists to operate strictly within designated zones to avoid sanctions.
