Lagos Takes Delivery Of 12 New Train Coaches To Boost Rail Operations
The Lagos State Government has announced the arrival of three brand-new train sets, comprising a total of 12 coaches, for the Blue Line Rail.
This was disclosed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday.
According to him, the new additions will help reduce wait times and improve the overall commuting experience for passengers on the Blue Line.
“I’m happy to share that we have taken delivery of three brand-new train sets of 12 coaches in total for the Lagos Blue Line Rail.
“This means shorter wait times and more comfortable trips for everyone using the Blue Line. It’s a step forward in our efforts to make daily commute in Lagos less stressful and more reliable.
“We’re not stopping here. Work is ongoing to extend the Blue Line all the way to Okokomaiko, and we’re aiming to finish that by 2026,” Sanwo-Olu said on X.
The first phase of the Blue Line Rail, a 13-kilometer stretch from Marina to Mile 2, was commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023.
Buhari also witnessed the signing of the contract for the second phase of the project between the Lagos State Government and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the construction firm handling the project.
Passenger operations began in September 2023, and within its first year, the Blue Line moved approximately two million passengers.
The second phase, currently under construction, will add another 14 kilometres to the line, extending it from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko in Lagos’ western corridor.
When fully completed, the Blue Line is projected to carry up to 250,000 passengers daily.
Sanwo-Olu thanked Lagosians for their patience and optimism, saying, “I know it’s been a long time coming, but I truly believe we’re building something that will change how we move around this city for the better.”
