Lagos Speaker Obasa Apologises To DSS For Assault On Officers
The Lagos State Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has apologised to the Department of State Services (DSS) for the alleged assault on its operatives by staff members of the state assembly.
Obasa offered the apology hours after reclaiming his position as speaker.
The lawmaker was impeached by his colleagues on January 13, 2025, on allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected and sworn in as his successor.
In his statement on Thursday, Obasa expressed regret over the assault captured in widely circulated videos on February 17, 2025.
“On behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I hereby apologise to the security agencies involved, for the embarrassment caused them and, in particular, the assault on security operatives of the DSS as widely circulated in videos. We value you and the work you are doing. You are the ones we call on in our time of need for the protection of lives and property in and around the assembly and Lagos state. It is clear that we, the assembly, requested your presence for additional support on this particular day. This is what we have always done in the past,” Obasa wrote.
“It is regrettable that security operatives of the DSS had to be assaulted in the hallowed chambers of our State Assembly. I hereby apologise unequivocally on behalf of the entire Assembly.”
Obasa noted that the Lagos assembly and the security agencies have maintained a relationship built on mutual respect and cooperation.
He appealed that the incident must not strain the partnership, adding that the assembly remained committed to fostering peace and order in the state.
A Federal High Court in Lagos had on Tuesday ordered the remand of the suspects behind the assault, Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Adetu Adekunle, and Fatimoh Adetola, pending their arraignment.
The DSS, through its lawyer, Michael Bajela, accused the defendants of obstructing security officers on duty without lawful justification and disseminating misleading content on social media to incite public disorder.
It further accused the suspects of spreading false information aimed at embarrassing the agency.
Meanwhile, Obasa’s apology came hours after he stormed the assembly complex with security operatives and declared himself the legitimate leader of the parliament.
Obasa’s deputy had her security aides withdrawn in an apparent bid to enable him to retake the seat.
