Lagos Signs Deal With Int’l Consortium To Boost Water Supply
The Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an international consortium comprising Belstar Capital and ENKA for the rehabilitation and expansion of the State’s water supply infrastructure.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held on Monday in Alausa, Ikeja, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, described the collaboration as a major move to address Lagos’ critical water infrastructure challenges.
He stated that the project would involve the construction, rehabilitation, and installation of water treatment facilities and distribution networks to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for underserved communities across the State.
Wahab explained that the initiative would focus on both the rehabilitation of existing water works and the construction of entirely new facilities in various locations. He stressed that all activities under the project would comply with relevant regulations, including social and safety standards.
The Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, who also spoke at the event, pledged the corporation’s full support by providing technical input, development assistance, and coordination with stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.
He noted that the projects would not only improve access to potable water but also significantly reduce the prevalence of water-borne diseases across the State.
On behalf of the consortium, Group Managing Director of Belstar Capital, Mr. Tewodros Polk, reaffirmed their commitment to leveraging their technical expertise and experience to ensure the delivery of long-term, high-quality service.
He added that local subcontractors would be engaged during the project phases to promote capacity building and foster sustainable development in Lagos.
The project will be executed under the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Finance (EPC+F) model, with insurance support provided by the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), and is expected to be completed within 36 months.
