A Lagos resident, Mr Olawale Ogunbadejo, has been remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre by a Magistrate’s Court for illegal waste disposal on a public road.

The court ordered his remand on Wednesday, pending a trial scheduled for June 26.

This was disclosed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr Wale Ajetunmobi.

“Mr Olawale Ogunbadejo, caught disposing of refuse on the road, has just been remanded in Kiri-Kiri Prison by the Magistrate’s Court till June 26,” he wrote on X.

Ogunbadejo, who resides at No. 25, Ajiboye Street, Alapere, in the Ketu area of Lagos, was caught on camera on Wednesday dumping waste on the Alapere Link Bridge.

The state government earlier on Wednesday pledged to reward anyone with useful information that can lead to his arrest.

Ogunbadejo was later apprehended in a joint operation carried out by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI.

His arrest followed credible surveillance and tip-offs from community members.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the arrest and immediate prosecution of the suspect is part of the state’s broader strategy to clamp down on environmental violations and restore order to public spaces.

“The offender was caught red-handed disposing of refuse indiscriminately in public, thereby undermining the government’s efforts toward achieving a cleaner and more hygienic Lagos. His arrest is a clear demonstration of the state’s resolve to enforce environmental laws and restore sanity to public spaces. The suspect will immediately be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant law of the state,” Wahab said on X.

He emphasised the importance of public cooperation, noting that community involvement and vigilance were crucial in identifying and reporting the offender.

He added that the government will continue to strengthen environmental enforcement through proactive operations, community engagement, and public advocacy.

“Dear Lagosians, your support and vigilance are the backbone of our success so far. Together, we are building a city that will not only be resilient and sustainable but also one that our children will be proud to inherit.

“The Lagos State Government assures the public that it will continue to protect the environment through proactive enforcement, community engagement, and sustained advocacy, all aimed at achieving the vision of a #CleanerLagos,” he added.
