Lagos LG polls: LASIEC vows credible elections, dismisses protest rumours

The Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, Retired Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible local government elections, despite reports of ongoing protests.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Thursday following a security strategy meeting, Okikiolu-Ighile dismissed reports of disruptions, stating that only a court ruling could halt the electoral process.

“To the best of my knowledge, there is no protest affecting the conduct of the election,” she said. “And even if there is one, LASIEC’s preparations remain unaffected. We are fully prepared, as much as humanly possible to hold a successful poll.”

She stressed that the commission is taking all necessary measures to ensure a peaceful and transparent election. According to her, 57 chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions are being contested, with voting expected to take place across 13,325 polling units in the state.

Okikiolu-Ighile revealed that LASIEC has registered a total of 760,195 eligible voters for the exercise. To ensure adequate security, she confirmed that 13,325 security operatives, four per polling unit, have been mobilized to maintain law and order during the election.

“We are conducting this election strictly within the boundaries of the law,” she noted.

The LASIEC chair also issued a passionate appeal to voters, urging them to participate fully in the electoral process and to resist any form of vote-buying.

“Your vote is your voice. Do not sell or trade it. This election matters deeply, it affects governance at the grassroots level and shapes the future of your children.”

She reiterated the commission’s resolve to overcome any emerging challenges and deliver an election that meets democratic standards.
