In a sweeping enforcement operation aimed at promoting road safety and reducing accidents, the Lagos State Government has impounded over 200 vehicles for not being roadworthy across the state.

The operation, led by the Director of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Engr. Akin-George Fashola targeted vehicles deemed unfit for the road, with a large proportion being commercial minibuses such as Danfos and Korope.

These types of vehicles have been identified as significant contributors to traffic accidents in Lagos.

Speaking on the enforcement exercise, Fashola clarified that the crackdown was not limited to private vehicles, as is commonly believed, but extends to all categories of vehicles contributing to the state’s transport ecosystem.

He further advised vehicle owners, particularly those using their vehicles for commercial purposes, to subject them to inspections at VIS annexe offices before putting them into operation.

“Before commercialising your vehicle, make sure it is fit for the road. You can even take it to any of our annexe offices for proper inspection before putting it into operation,” Fashola advised, according to a statement signed by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation, Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, on Sunday.

The VIS Director reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining the initiative, noting that continued enforcement will help build a safer and more efficient transport network in the state.
