Lagos Govt Arraigns Man For Beating Wife After Childbirth
The Lagos State Government has arraigned a man accused of brutally assaulting his wife just four days after she gave birth, leaving her in a critical condition.
The accused was brought before Magistrate Mobolaji O. Tanimola at the Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba on Monday.
He faces a two-count charge of assault occasioning harm and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, contrary to Sections 170 and 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
According to reports shared online, the assault allegedly occurred in the presence of the woman’s mother and the couple’s newborn baby.
The victim was said to have passed out during the beating and placed on emergency medical treatment at a hospital.
The case has been adjourned to August 11, 2025, while the defendant remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance against all forms of domestic abuse and assured the public that justice would be pursued diligently.
“The Lagos State Government, through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), reiterates its ZERO tolerance for all forms of abuse and unwavering commitment to ensuring that survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence receive justice, protection, and holistic support,” said Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, Head of the DSVA’s Public Affairs Unit.
She also urged residents to remain vigilant and report cases of abuse: “If you see something, say something. Report it!”
