Lagos Gives Residents 2 Weeks To Vacate 15 Buildings At Iponri Estate
The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has given occupants of over 15 buildings at Iponri Housing Estate in the Surulere area of the state two-week ultimatum to vacate.
The buildings were identified to be distressed.
The General Manager of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, disclosed that the agency had issued several notices and warnings to the affected residents, urging them to vacate the area to prevent the loss of lives and property.
He cautioned that the deteriorating condition of some buildings poses significant danger, as their structural integrity has been compromised and they could collapse at any moment.
To prevent the disaster often associated with building collapse, Oki stressed the importance of swift action by the state government to ensure public safety.
The LASBCA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing building safety standards across the state and urged residents to comply with evacuation orders to avoid casualties.
“In addition, LASBCA assured the public that it would continue to monitor buildings across the State to identify other structures that may pose similar risks to avert dangers,” LASBCA’s Director, Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, said in a statement.
“While explaining the risks that the distressed buildings possess to the livelihood of the residents, a house of Assembly member, representing Surulere constituency 1, Honoruable Desmond Elliot, and Governor Sanwo-Olu Special Adviser on Housing, Barrister Barakat Bakare implored the residents not to compromise standards but abide by the building codes and regulations. The Honorable applauded LASBCA on their dedication in ensuring sanity in the built environment and also implored the residents to vocate the area to Safeguard Lives and Properties,” the statement added.
