Lagos Apprehends Six For Illegal Alcohol Sales In Traffic
The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, apprehended six individuals on Monday for illegally selling sachet alcohol and aphrodisiacs in traffic.
The suspects, identified as Kemi Akeju (36), Bola Oladimeji (49), Monsurat Bakare (40), Tosin Olayiwola (38), Lateefat Bakare (45), and Stella Joseph (41), were arrested during a clearance operation by KAI operatives along the Iyana-Isolo-Ilasamaja axis.
Speaking on the arrests at the agency’s headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi, the Corps Marshal of KAI, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole, commended the operation and reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating street hawking of alcohol.
‘‘We received reports from motorists about how vendors engaged in the illegal sales of sachet alcohol, liquor and aphrodisiacs keep hawking these drinks in traffic which can contribute to the high rate of accidents via drunk driving and passenger-induced chaos,” Cole said in a statement.
He also condemned the growing issue of drunk driving in Lagos, emphasizing that research has shown it to be a major factor in road accidents within and outside the state.
The suspects have since been charged to court for prosecution.
