Lafia University Bans Sign-Out Celebrations

The management of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has banned sign-out celebrations during graduation festivities following a fatal accident involving two tricycles on the university campus.

Sign-out celebrations typically involve final-year students signing each other’s shirts and engaging in social activities to mark the end of their studies, usually after final exams.

In a statement issued by Registrar Malam Nuradeen Abdu on Thursday, the university cited student safety as the reason for banning sign-out celebrations at the Permanent Site Campus Gate.

“The management of the FULafia no longer permitted to take place at the Permanent Site Campus Gate of the University henceforth,” the statement said.

Instead, the school urged students to hold celebrations within their faculty premises.

The statement also prohibits the use of public address systems during these celebrations and forbids students from driving or running around with cars.

It urged students to cooperate with the directives to prevent any further preventable accidents and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.

It noted that any violation of the rules will lead to immediate disciplinary action.

The school management cautioned that it prioritises student safety and urges students to cooperate with the directives to prevent further accidents.

The ban on the sign-out ceremony also follows the recent death of a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola, during a sign-out ceremony at the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

According to the report, the 300-level Mechanical Engineering student who was shot during the ceremony was found unresponsive after attempting to leave the venue on his motorbike.

The report noted that the police were alerted, and his body was taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Morgue.
