Kwara University lecturers cry out over unpaid allowances

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Kwara State University, Malete, chapter, has cried out over unpaid earned allowances of lecturers in the institution.

In a protest by the teachers of the institution, the Chairman of the chapter, Professor Abdulganiyu Sheu Salau, lamented that since 2015-2016, the lecturers of the university have not been paid their academic earned allowances despite several efforts and consultations with Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and top government officials on the issue.

“We are pleading to governor Abdulrazaq again to pay us our academic earned allowances. In the last couple of weeks, the Federal government just released N50b to Nigerian universities and some of our colleagues got between N1m and N750,000 depending on their cadre.

“In Kwara state University Malete, there was nothing like that and we have met with so many state commissioners and permenant secretaries.

“There was even a time a 7-man committee was set up to look into our report and came out with a document through the then Head of Service of the state, but till now, nothing is forthcoming despite several letters on the issue,” he stated.

Professor Abdulganiyu lamented that “it is like the governor is not listening to us, or probably, the commissioners are not getting in touch with or across to him.”

The union pleaded with Governor Abdulrazaq to pay them the academic earned allowances “since there is a lot of money in circulation, since he promised that as long as subvention and allocation improves, he is going to pay the earned allowances.”

“Subvention and allocations have improved, so we are waiting and expecting him to pay our academic earned allowances as we are committed to doing the needful,” the union declared.

Professor Abdulganiyu further noted that “it is only when several efforts have failed that strike becomes the last option”, adding that “this is the last warning to the government for us to take action.”
