Kwara: Lafiagi development union warns against protest over kidnappings
Lafiagi Descendants Development Union, LADDU, in Lafiagi Local Government Area of Kwara State, has dissociated itself from the proposed protest against kidnappings in Lafiagi Emirate.
The main socio-cultural group in a statement by Dr Abdullahi Jibril Mohammed, National President of the union, on Friday, appealed for reconsideration of the planned protest.
The statement read in part: “While the Lafiagi Descendants Development Union (LADDU) is not involved in the planned protest against kidnapping in Lafiagi Emirate, we respectfully urge the organisers to carefully consider the risk of the protest being hijacked by undesirable elements within our midst.
“We fully understand the justification for public concern, given the continuing rise in kidnapping incidents and the resulting trauma inflicted on our community. This situation indeed calls for sober reflection and united action.
“However, we wish to emphasise that LADDU has been actively engaging with both state and federal authorities on this worsening security challenge. We are aware of multiple ongoing and planned interventions aimed at reversing this disturbing trend, and we remain hopeful of positive results in the near future.”
The union appealed to the organisers to work closely with the state government, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders, granting some time for these efforts to yield the expected outcomes.
The union further advised that, rather than proceeding with the protest, energies should be directed towards identifying and exposing collaborators within the communities to ensure they are brought to justice.
It also called on the planners of the protest to actively support the evolving community-led security model with grassroots participation and partner with the Emirate Security Committee and the military personnel already on the ground.
“Let us channel our collective resolve into coordinated action that will combat kidnapping and restore lasting peace to our communities,” it added.
