Kwara gov engages citizens on 2026 budget preparation process

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State on Tuesday encouraged citizens to give constructive feedback on government activities, including how best to serve them, according to a statement by his spokesman, Rafiu Ajakaye.

Speaking at a citizens’ engagement session on the 2026 budget in Bode Saadu, Moro Local Government Area, the governor urged residents to provide useful information on their needs.

He said the government is open to being told what to improve upon, the statement added.

The session, an initiative of the administration organised by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, seeks to gather public input through consultations with CSOs, NGOs, the organised private sector, traditional rulers, and the wider public.

“I am glad to be back in Moro today and for this large turnout. This session is good for our development because it helps us to plan well,” he stated.

“A budget is a statement of intent which focuses on the direction the government is headed in the financial year. As an administration, we have made it a duty to constantly harvest the views of the public and specific areas of focus for the coming financial year.

“Citizens engagement has, therefore, served as a barometer to know what the public needs and how resources should be allocated across the state. It is important to mention that every government project and programme is important.

“They are all born out of varying interests and needs of the public. For instance, the construction of roads, pedestrian walkways, water projects, health facilities and investments in agricultural initiatives are just as important as having a technology hub that gives our children a strong head-start in the fast-space digital economy that we have today.”

According to the governor, “it is important that you let us know your truth. Let us know what affects you and what will improve your lives. You wear the shoe and you know where it pinches. Tell us what the problems are so that we can put it in the next budget to improve your wellbeing.”

Abdulrazaq, noting that the administration is entering a new phase, added: “We are excited with the volume of development going on across the state. Basically, the support of the people is what motivates us to do better.”

He commended participants for their patriotic spirit and commitment to the Kwara project.

Commissioner for Planning and Economic Development, Dr Mary Arinde, described citizens’ engagement as a compelling necessity for effective governance. She said the event provides a platform to listen and respond to public needs, promote accountability, and encourage citizens to take part in decision-making processes.

The Ohoro of Shao, Oba Dr Obalowu Atolagbe, praised Governor Abdulrazaq’s efforts on gender balance in government, infrastructure development, and human capital growth. He urged the administration to construct more township roads and rehabilitate the Shao-Sobi water project.

Prince Olatunji Adebara of Jebba called on the government to establish a School of Nursing in Jebba to deepen access to quality healthcare services.

Director of Planning at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, Samsudeen Aregbe, who presented a breakdown of the 2024 and 2025 budget performance, said the administration had performed excellently.

The session was attended by stakeholders from across Kwara North.
