Kwara: Bandits kill 40-year-old man in failed kidnap attempt
A 40-year-old labourer, Abdullahi Shuaibu, was on Sunday, fatally shot in the early hours, following an attempted kidnapping by suspected armed bandits in Ekko village, near Lafiagi, in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The incident occurred around 1:50am when a group of armed men launched a coordinated assault on the residence of 50-year-old, Idris Jibril. Witnesses said the attackers fired multiple rounds as they tried to force their way into the building, believed to be the target of a planned abduction.
Although the gunmen were unsuccessful in breaching the house, tragedy struck when Shuaibu, who had been sleeping in the open near the residence, was hit by a stray bullet to the head. He died on the spot.
Following the failed operation, the assailants reportedly fled the area, leaving behind traces of the violent encounter. Three expended shells believed to be from AK-47 rifles were recovered at the scene by community members.
Confirming the incident, a security source said investigations were underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The victim’s body has been taken to a nearby mortuary for autopsy.
Meanwhile, residents of Ekko and neighbouring communities are urging authorities to step up surveillance and patrols in the region, citing escalating fears over the activities of armed groups operating in the area.
