On Wednesday, the federal government announced that the country’s power sector had achieved an unprecedented milestone as the country’s available power generation reached a record 6,003 megawatts (MW), the highest in its history.
The Ministry of Power announced this achievement, marking a significant step toward ensuring a sustainable and reliable electricity supply for Nigerians.
In a statement issued by Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser on Strategic Communication to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, the nation also recorded a peak generation evacuation of 5,801.84 MW and a daily maximum energy output of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours (MWh) within the same period.
Tunji said the milestones reflect Nigeria’s ongoing reforms and the federal government’s commitment, under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, to address the country’s energy challenges and boost economic growth.
“These achievements are not just numbers; they represent a brighter future for Nigeria, where businesses can thrive, households can enjoy uninterrupted power supply, and the economy can grow sustainably,” he said.
He added that these records are a testament to the dedication and strategic reforms spearheaded by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Ministry of Power’s efforts to optimize the nation’s energy infrastructure.
An economist and Group Managing Director, Crane Securities Limited, Mr Mike Eze, praised the development as a milestone in Nigeria’s power sector, noting that it demonstrates an improvement in electricity generation capacity.
Eze, in a chat with THE WHISTLER, described the achievement as “a step in the right direction,” highlighting that increased generation capacity could contribute to improved power supply and economic growth.
He lauded the government’s effort to improve infrastructure, stating, “This is a positive indicator that Nigeria is gradually addressing its long-standing electricity challenges. If sustained, this increase in power generation will boost industrial productivity and enhance overall economic development.”
He also believes that reaching the 6,003 MW mark reflects the impact of recent reforms, including investments in transmission infrastructure and better coordination between the generation, transmission, and distribution segments of the power sector.
However, another expert has expressed reservations, questioning whether this milestone will translate into a meaningful improvement in power supply for households and businesses.
An energy policy analyst, Mr. Johnson Dele, cautioned against celebrating too soon, stating that “hitting 6,003 MW is commendable, but the real challenge remains in ensuring efficient transmission and distribution. Without addressing grid stability and distribution bottlenecks, increased generation may not lead to improved electricity supply for Nigerians.”
Dele noted that despite previous increases in generation capacity, frequent system collapses and inefficient distribution networks have hindered the delivery of power to end users.
“If the necessary investments in transmission and distribution are not made, we may not see a significant impact on electricity supply for consumers,” he warned.
