Kosovo To Accept U.S. Deportees From Other Countries In New Agreement

Kosovo has agreed to a request from the U.S. government to temporarily receive a group of migrants deported from the United States.

U.S. and Kosovar officials confirmed the arrangement, which is part of the push by the U.S. President Donald Trump administration to forge third-country deportation deals.

According to CBS News, Kosovo will accept up to 50 deportees under the agreement, which the country’s embassy described as a gesture of cooperation with a key international ally.

“In response to the request from the United States regarding the reception and relocation of third-country nationals, we have expressed our willingness to cooperate with the United States in addressing this matter under established conditions,” the embassy stated.

The deportees will be temporarily relocated to Kosovo while officials there coordinate efforts to return them to their home countries. It remains unclear which countries the migrants are originally from or the specific reasons why they cannot be returned directly.

Typically, such third-country agreements are used when the migrants’ countries of origin refuse to accept them, often due to diplomatic tensions or concerns over identification and legal status.

Kosovo’s government said it would retain the right to select individuals from a proposed list, contingent upon criteria concerning public safety and the rule of law.

The U.S. State Department praised the agreement, calling it an important step in implementing Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda.

“We are grateful to our partner Kosovo for receiving third-country nationals removed from the United States and facilitating those aliens’ safe return to their home countries,” the department said.

Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008, maintains strong ties with the United States. The U.S. was among the first countries to recognize its sovereignty, although some nations, including Serbia, still reject its independence.

This is not the first time Kosovo has assisted the U.S. with relocation efforts. In 2021, the country agreed to host Afghan evacuees following the American military withdrawal from Afghanistan, especially those requiring additional security vetting.

The arrangement with Kosovo is the latest in a series of deportation deals under the Trump administration’s hardline immigration strategy.

The U.S. has already sent several hundred deportees from Asia and Africa to Costa Rica and Panama, and transferred more than 200 Venezuelans, some with alleged gang affiliations, to El Salvador.

However, other attempts to deport migrants to unstable countries like Libya and South Sudan have been blocked by U.S. courts.
