KEDCO admits to significant drop in power supply, cites reasons

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has admitted to a drop in daily electricity supply to customers across some northern states.

The disco said this is due to transmission challenges and power generation constraints.

It said there is a persistent shortfall of nearly 80 megawatts from its expected allocation.

Speaking at a town hall meeting with customers from Kano East, Nura Wada Nas, Chief Regulatory Officer who represented the Managing Director, disclosed that although the company is allocated 268 megawatts from the National Grid, it currently receives only about 180 megawatts daily.

“You can see there is a shortage of around almost 70 or 80 megawatts,” he said.

Wada further attributed the gap to issues faced by generation companies (Gencos) and the transmission network.

Acknowledging the instability of the national grid, he revealed the ongoing partnerships with renewable energy firms like Bagaji Renewable, which powers communities such as Zawa and Chiki with near-constant electricity.

“We’re now looking into solar and other alternatives to augment grid supply,” he said.
