Kano: Youths, police engage in physical fights over horse race

A fierce confrontation erupted on Saturday between horse riders and officers of the Nigeria Police Force in the Rimin Gata area, opposite Bayero University, Kano (New Site).

Zagazola Makama reports that the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. and involved a surveillance unit from the Rijiyar Zaki Division of the Kano State Police Command.

The police had reportedly acted on a tip-off regarding an unauthorised horse race taking place in the area.

The informant warned that the gathering had the potential to escalate into criminal activity such as phone snatching and possibly more serious violence.

Responding swiftly, the surveillance team moved to disperse the crowd of riders. However, resistance from the horse riders led to a physical clash with police officers.

Eyewitnesses reported rising tensions as officers attempted to detain some of the riders, who accused the police of using excessive force.

Though the situation was later brought under control, it remains unclear whether any arrests were made. No fatalities were reported.

The Kano State Police Command is yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
