Kano Police Arrest 41 Over Killing Of Rano DPO
The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 41 suspects in connection with the killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Division, CSP Baba Ali, who died after being attacked on duty on Monday, May 26, 2025.
The incident began when a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, allegedly under the influence of substances, was arrested for reckless and dangerous riding.
While in custody, Musa reportedly showed signs of weakness and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he later died around 6:00 a.m. the same day.
News of Musa’s death triggered the violence.
A group of miscreants, reportedly angered by the incident, mobilised and launched an attack on the Rano Police Division.
During the unrest, they looted the station, set parts of the building and two vehicles ablaze, vandalised ten additional vehicles, and assaulted CSP Ali.
Ali was later rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Initially, the police reported the arrest of 27 suspects and said the situation had been brought under control.
In a fresh update, the Command said investigations have led to a total of 41 arrests, including key individuals identified as principal suspects.
Describing the killing as “a grave attack on the very fabric of our society”, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, condemned the incident, noting it was “a direct assault on the sacrifices of our brave police officers who risk their lives daily to protect our communities.”
Kiyawa stressed that the police remain committed to a thorough investigation.
“The police are working tirelessly to ensure that no stone is left unturned in apprehending all those involved in this dastardly act,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has assured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Kano State.
He reiterated that “the police will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that all perpetrators are brought to justice.”
While commending the public for its cooperation, the command called for calm and urged residents to continue supporting the ongoing investigation.
“We will continue to stand united in our resolve to protect and serve our community, and we are determined to ensure that those who seek to undermine our efforts are held accountable,” the command stated.
The police also honoured the memory of the late CSP Baba Ali, praising his courage and the dedication of other officers who continue to risk their lives for the safety of the state.
