Kano govt expresses concern over low ranking in online voter registration
The Kano state government has expressed concern over the state’s poor performance in the ongoing online voter registration exercise, ranking 18th among the 36 states.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this on Wednesday when the state’s voter registration awareness committee met with members of the Kwankwasiyya writers and musicians association to
solicite the group’s support in sensitising the public on the importance of registering for voter cards.
Waiya revealed that during their engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano, it was reported that about 5,000 people had completed the initial stages of the free online registration. However, updated figures later showed that a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians registered nationwide.
He lamented that only 10,000 registrations came from Kano, placing the state at 18th position, behind several less populous states. “This is disturbing, because Kano, as the most populous state, is expected to lead in voter registration,” Waiya said.
He called for stronger efforts to mobilise residents, stressing that Kano currently has six million registered voters, but the target is to increase the figure to 10 million before the 2027 general elections.
