JUST IN: Six Feared Dead As Tourist Submarine Sinks In Egypt’s Red Sea
At least six people are feared dead, and nine others injured after a tourist submarine sank off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, early Thursday, according to CNN.
Authorities confirmed that 29 passengers were rescued from the vessel, while the injured, including four in critical condition, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The submarine, identified as the Sindbad, was carrying approximately 40 tourists when it went down near the harbor.
The vessel, which has been operating in the Hurghada area for several years, offers deep-sea exploration experiences, taking passengers 25 meters (82 feet) underwater to view marine life and coral reefs.
The incident adds to maritime accidents recorded along Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
In November, the Sea Story yacht, a Dutch shipyard, sank in the same region, leaving 11 people dead or missing.
UK investigators have reported at least 16 similar accidents involving liveaboard vessels in the area over the past five years.
Meanwhile, Egyptian authorities are investigating the cause of the last incident, while rescue operations continue.
