JUST IN: Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori Defects To APC

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Wednesday, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This followed a closed-door meeting held on Wednesday at the Government House in Asaba, the state capital.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, confirmed the development to Arise News, noting that the decision followed wide consultations with political stakeholders.

The move, according to Ahon, is in the interest of Delta’s long-term development.

The governor’s defection came amid speculation of the governor’s possible defection to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 election.

Meanwhile, a political analyst in Delta State, George Urhie, has warned the leadership of the APC against allowing the governor to defect to the party.

On Tuesday, Urhie said the move by the governor is driven by self-preservation and a desire to evade accountability for alleged misuse of state resources.

“In reality, Oborevwori’s motivations appear to be centred around securing his political future, evading accountability for the PDP’s alleged misuse of state resources, and shielding Senator Ifeanyi Okowa from potential prosecution over the alleged mismanagement of N1.3 trillion in 13% derivation funds meant for oil-producing communities,” he said.

A week ago, Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, said the governor was not welcomed into the APC.

He said. “Oborevwori wants to come to the APC, but tell him to stay where he is…. He will be defeated. We don’t want him in the APC.

“APC doesn’t need the governor’s membership to win Delta State,” he asserted. “Delta will surely become an APC state come 2027.

“Twenty-five years of corrupt governance by the PDP is enough. We must take over.”
