Japan Donates Vehicles, Flood Detection Equipment To Anambra State
The Government of Japan, through the initiative “Emergency Support to Climate Change” in partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services, has donated several pieces of equipment to Anambra State in response to the impact of the 2022 floods.
The resources will aid the early detection of floods and assist the Soludo administration in addressing future flood occurrences.
The resources provided include- A donation of 10 vehicles to improve logistical capacity
Equipment to enhance information and communication technology.
The installation of two GPS water level detector sensors at key riverbank locations to enable effective responses to floods and other climate-related disasters.
In a remark on behalf of the Japanese Government, the Charge d’Affaires, Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, Mr Hitoshi Kozaki, restated the government’s commitment to helping Anambra State to mitigate flooding and other climatic challenges, saying that the recent intervention was targeted at saving lives and properties.
In various addresses, the UNOPS Project Manager, Mr Herbert Appiah and Director UNOPS Ghana Multi-Country Office, Dr Ifeoma Charles-Monwuba, while explaining that the project is funded by the government of Japan through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by UNOPS, said that the gesture was aimed at reducing the damages caused by the yearly flooding in Anambra State and to protect the people of the state from future disaster.
Responding, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, thanked the Japanese government and UNOPS for coming to the aid of the state, saying that the intervention will go a long way in complementing the efforts of his government towards protecting Ndi Anambra from adverse effects of flood disaster.
Governor Soludo, while intimating to the group the various efforts made by his government to address the flood disaster and other climatic challenges confronting the state, called on international organisations and other developed countries of the world to assist the state in providing a permanent solution to the annual flooding.
