Japan Donates ₦3.6bn Road Construction Equipment to FERMA

The Japanese government has donated road construction equipment worth ₦3.6bn to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
The equipment, which was officially commissioned on Friday, is expected to significantly enhance FERMA’s capacity to maintain and rehabilitate the country’s expansive and ageing road network.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, hailed the donation as a strategic milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing infrastructure renewal efforts.
A statement from the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Works, Mohammed A. Ahmed, on Saturday, qouted Goronyo as
describing the equipment as a “game changer” that would enable engineers and technicians to deliver more efficient, sustainable, and timely road maintenance across the country.
“This generous contribution from Japan brings us closer to our vision of a smoother, safer, and more reliable travel experience across Nigeria. Roads are the lifeblood of our economy and daily life, and this equipment will greatly strengthen our ability to utilise and preserve them, “the minister said.
The minister noted that Nigeria’s road network remains crucial to economic activity, particularly in sectors such as commerce, agriculture, and healthcare.
He noted that the network has suffered from years of under-maintenance and degradation.
The minister commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising infrastructure development as a key pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as central to driving inclusive economic growth.
Goronyo urged FERMA’s leadership and technical teams to ensure the donated equipment is put to optimal use, stressing that its effective deployment would reflect the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Nigerians.
“This is more than a ceremonial handover. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in road maintenance—one that aligns with our broader vision of infrastructure-driven prosperity”, he said.
