Nollywood actor and movie producer, Chris Bassey, has become a plumber after relocating to Canada.

The actor disclosed this during a recent live Instagram chat with popular media personality, Daddy Freeze.

Bassey, who gained recognition as a movie producer, explained that his new job as a plumber abroad offers him a more relaxed lifestyle and better pay than some tech jobs.

When Daddy Freeze asked him what profession he had taken up in Canada, Bassey responded, “I’m into construction here. I do construction; I am a plumber.”

Daddy Freeze, surprised by his response, asked why an actor would make such a change in career despite his fame.

In response, Bassey who highlighted the financial benefits of his new job in pidgin English, said, “In the last seven months, the province I have visited just on weekends in Canada, even person wey dey do tech no fit afford am. For here, I don’t know about the UK or US.”

Nigeria has seen a rise in the number of celebrities relocating abroad in search of better opportunities.

The term “JAPA,” which refers to Nigerians seeking greener pastures overseas, has become a popular phrase among citizens. It means to “run away” or “escape” in Yoruba language.

Many who have left the country cited factors such as economic hardship, insecurity, high cost of living, scarcity of jobs, and unreliable electricity as reasons for their departure, while others are just in search of a better and more peaceful life outside the country.

Among Nigerian celebrities who have relocated include Omoni Oboli, a renowned actor and filmmaker, who moved to Canada with her family.

Helen Paul, a comedian and actor, also moved to the United States. Like Oboli, she has continued to work in the entertainment industry. Also, Samklef, a music producer known for his contributions to Afrobeats, has resettled in the U.S.
