‘It would be crazy if Man United didn’t sign him’ – Wayne Rooney on Donnarumma

Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, has urged the Red Devils to sign 26-year-old Italian goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Rooney is of the view that the goalkeeper, who is no longer wanted at Paris Saint-Germain, would arrive at Old Trafford and bring stability and calmness to the defence.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former England attacker recalled a similar situation when Dutch goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, was signed to replace Roy Carroll and Tim Howard at Old Trafford.

He believes the Red Devils should take the bold decision to replace Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır, adding that the players no longer have confidence in them.

“I go back to when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard in goal. I don’t think there was 100 per cent trust from the defenders in front of those two goalkeepers.

“But the minute [Edwin] Van der Sar came in and calmed everything down, the defenders trusted him a lot more and you see a better output of performance,” he said.

Rooney, a legend at Old Trafford, noted that his former club needed that confidence at the moment and believes that the PSG goalkeeper could be of great help.

The former England international added, “I think with Donnaruma, he’s 26. He’s one of the best keepers in the world. It would be crazy if Manchester United didn’t go for him.”

DAILY POST reports that an error from Bayındır, who was in goal for Manchester United against Arsenal on Sunday, led to the Red Devils’ narrow defeat to the Gunners.

Despite Bayındır’s claim that he was fouled by Arsenal defender, William Saliba, the goal stood, handing the Red Devils their first defeat of the season.

PSG manager, Luis Enrique has made it clear the Italian goalkeeper, Donnarumma is no longer in his plans at the club and the player is yet to sign a new deal.
