Israel, on Monday, attacked Iran’s state broadcaster’s headquarters in Tehran during a live transmission and injured multiple staff members and temporarily took the channel off air.
The strike, confirmed by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, came after what he described as a “large-scale evacuation of local residents” in the area.
Katz declared that Israel would “strike the Iranian dictator wherever he is,” in what appears to be a direct escalation in the ongoing conflict between both nations.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later issued a statement claiming responsibility, saying its air force had hit a “communication centre being used for military purposes by the Iranian Armed Forces.”
The IDF added that the target was operating “under the guise of civilian activity,” and that the strike was carried out with precision following advance warnings to reduce civilian casualties.
Shortly after the attack, Iranian state TV reported that “a number” of its employees had been injured.
A reporter for the channel said they had been “working until the very last moment before the attack.”
The network’s director, Peyman Jebeli, appeared on air holding a blood-stained paper and vowed that both the broadcaster and its workers were “standing until the end.”
The broadcaster is located in a compound resembling a mini city within the capital, Tehran’s District 3, which Israel had warned residents to evacuate ahead of the attack.
That area was marked on maps published by Israeli authorities earlier in the day as one of the target areas.
Amid the fallout, a video clip shared by Iranian state media showed the moment the strike hit, with debris visibly falling from the ceiling inside the studio. The news anchor on air was seen moving off-camera just as the blast occurred.
Despite the damage, the state TV resumed live broadcasting minutes later, with an on-screen message stating that “all programmes are resuming live without any interruptions.”
The broadcaster condemned the attack as a “brutal violation,” accusing Israel of attempting to “silence the voice of truth.”
Meanwhile, at the G7 summit in Canada, the United States President, Donald Trump, commented on the ongoing conflict, saying Iran is “not winning this war” and urged both sides to begin talks immediately.
“They should talk before it’s too late,” Trump said.
He declined to specify conditions under which the United States might enter the conflict militarily, stating only that he didn’t “want to talk about that.”
