International Women’s Day: Sokoto Senator Calls For Bold Action On Women’s Inclusion

The Senator representing Sokoto south Aminu Warizi Tambuwal has called for bold action on women’s inclusion in leadership, governance and education.

The former Governor of Sokoto State celebrated the contributions of women across all sectors of society, from the home front to public service, business, education, and agriculture.

He said the indispensable role women play in shaping the nation’s future calls for practical steps to ensure their full participation in national development.

“This year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ is a powerful reminder that words are not enough—we must take bold, decisive steps to close gender gaps, break barriers, and create a more equitable society

“Investing in women’s education, economic empowerment, and leadership is not just a moral duty but a necessity for national growth and development.”

Recalling his tenure as Governor of Sokoto State, Tambuwal recounts his dedication to women’s empowerment by ensuring full compliance with the 35% Affirmative Action policy in governance.

He said that his administration took concrete steps to increase women’s representation by appointing them in key positions, including commissioners, permanent secretaries, directors-general, special advisers, and councillors, as well as numerous female directors and heads of departments across government institutions.

According to him, those appointments were strategically aimed at ensuring women’s inclusion in decision-making roles at various levels.

Beyond governance, Tambuwal’s administration also prioritised women’s education and capacity-building, recognising its critical role in fostering sustainable development.

Under his leadership, Sokoto State established the Agency for Girl-Child Education to drive policies and initiatives aimed at expanding educational opportunities for girls.

This initiative was designed to enhance access to learning, promote literacy, and empower young girls to contribute meaningfully to society.

“As a nation, we must move beyond promises and act with urgency to ensure that women have access to opportunities, resources, and representation. We cannot afford to leave half of our population behind,” he stated.

Tambuwal further commended women across Nigeria and beyond who continue to break barriers, defy stereotypes, and drive positive change in their communities.

“To all the women making a difference, your resilience inspires us all. Your dreams are valid, your contributions are invaluable, and your success is a victory for us all.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, Tambuwal’s message serves as a clarion call for sustained action to achieve gender parity, reaffirming his unwavering support for women’s advancement in all spheres of life.
